First time mosin

Just got back from the range where I tried out my new mosin for the first time, and let me tell you, I have a new respect for the Russian soldiers who used these things. Maybe I'm a wimp, maybe I'm inexperienced with old bolt rifles, but that thing kicked like a mule! I'm pretty sure my shoulder will be bruised. But it was still a blast to shoot, no pun intended.

I didn't bring my targets home cause they were the stick on shoot and see type but I had a good group at 50 yards with 3 shots within a 1" square, shooting rested. Out at 100 yards it wasn't as good. I did get a bullseye and the rest were within 5 inches. I think that was probably due to me anticipating the shot too much. I wasn't expecting it to have that much recoil and by the time I was shooting at 100 yards my shoulder was hurting. But No excuses. Was the bullseye just luck?.... Probably. Lol. It'll take a little getting used to shooting a rifle that powerful.

I also took out the new ar I just built and had some trouble with it not cycling. By the time I figured it was probably gas port/tube alignment and got it shooting, I guess the gas block roll pin fell out and that put an end to the ar fun. So hopefully I'll pop a new one in before my next trip and it'll stay and the gun will cycle properly.

All in all, fun day at the range. Gonna go ice my shoulder now.

And a new respect for Russian women. A good number of their snipers were female. A lot of it is the stock design, and shooting from a bench is about the most painful position I've found with a Mosin. What ammo were you using?

You out at Kitsap Rifle and Revolver?

Tickbite.com sells a good rubber butt plate for the 91/30. I use them on both of my full length Mosins and I find them much more comfortable to shoot.

I put on a rubber butt plate and I still get bruises...

Yeah they were some tough ladies. They would put me to shame. I only shot from a rest. After feeling the recoil while sitting I was a little apprehensive about standing. Haha. I was trying not to be timid but man I'm just not used to that. I did order a recoil pad. Not sure how much it will help. I was using wpa polyformance non corrosive ammo. I'll probably order some surplus spam cans soon but I wanted to get to the range and test the thing out.

Yes sir, it's the only range near by. About a 20 minute drive.

Glad I'm not the only one. My ego was starting to get bruised right along with my shoulder.

So it sounds like its normal for the mosin to hurt a bit?

The rubber buttplate really does help. Plus it adds a inch or two to your reach if you have long arms.

I do love the big fire ball and the kick!

It's definitely fun. Until the hurt starts. Rubber butt plate should be here by next week.

You MUST shoot it standing next time with a hasty sling. Then you can truly say you've been kicked by a mule with that stock tight into your shoulder :D
