Thank-you for all the advice! I'll post back when I have narrowed my search down to a couple particular rifles and grab a few more opinions! In the mean-time, does anyone have a favorite scope they enjoy using?

I'd personally go for a much cheaper gun that will get the job done. Particularly when starting out in a new hobby. What happens if you decide if it's not for you? You're going to loose an awful lot unloading it......

Default A quick question

What do your two friends shoot ? Have you shot their's ?
A lot of really good advice has already been given, but you sound like youre ready to drop a lot of cash for a expensive hobby guns, ammo, hunting is a very addictive sport and every hunter / shooting enthuist knows this. Given you really don't have the experince I would suggest with a good middle of the road rig that has already been mentioned and progress from that. A $2500 rifle and scope won't make you an expert shooter or hunter right out of the box.

^ +100

What area of the country are you in Robo???

Cabelas are always having great deals on blowouts down in Utah and in Anchorage.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Centerfire-Rifles/Bolt-Action|/pc/104792580/c/105522480/sc/105523380/Weatherby-Vanguard-2-Deer-Skulls-Rifle/1381537.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fbolt-action%2Fweatherby%2F_%2FN-1102332%2B1000005120%2FNe-1000005120%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_105523380%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat1047 92580%253Bcat105522480%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_ stype%3DGNU&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104792580%3Bcat105522 480%3Bcat105523380

Check your Cabelas or other sporting good store for similar deals.

Something like that is a great value, and will last your lifetime. The remainder of your money you could buy a lot of ammo or reloading supplies to make you a great shooter.

I totally agree! I'm not looking to become an expert shooter overnight, the budget I have set for myself is really more of an upper-end guide line than anything. I have been out to ranges with friends quite often and know I enjoy the sport, as well as the hunting trips (first-time buyer, not first time shooter!). One friend shoots a Tikka Lite .300 WSM and the other a Sako 85 Grey Wolf in .308. Both provide a rewarding experience, though I must admit I enjoy the 85 more. Whether its enough for $800 more I'm not sure :P. I am quite comfortable with the .308 caliber as well, so I think I'm leaning towards that as my first. Sadly I don't have experience with a 30.06 so I personally don't have enough information to jump on that caliber just yet.

Anyways, I really have enjoyed the feedback here, and am in the process of narrowing it down to a few choices..I'll post back later for some discussion when I'm ready! Thanks again everyone

A 308 is a fine cartridge. Just think of it as the runt of the litter in 30.06's. The ammunition is very accurate, and any 600-700 dollar gun will more than likely outshoot most of the people on this forum. I am a big fan of Sako's, but yes, they are extra pricey. My second rifle ended up being a Weatherby vanguard and it is well enjoyed. Go to the store and hold them all and find the one that beckons you. They are all just apples and oranges, really.

I can't help you with your rifle/scope choice, as I'm not a hunter. But I would like to add a few things.

First, welcome! I enjoyed reading your initial post in this thread because you can tell you have done research and have some things in mind. I hate it when someone just says "what should I buy?" So, I'm glad you do research and think things through. Also that you give those who will be advising guidelines on how to advise.

Next, I may not be a hunter, but I definitely agree a high end of $800 for the rifle itself will suffice. I agree with the above members, you could grab a bunch of ammo with the extra, or reloading supplies. Or, and this is my actual advice - snag up a good back up handgun for carrying while hunting. My preference would be a revolver. Maybe a S&W in 44 Magnum. Another good choice would be a semi auto in 10 mm. The reason I advise this is for many reason. It could also be used as a home defense gun, a good target gun, etc. Plus, if you get too close to a bear (or he gets too close to you!) it would prolly be quicker than aiming in with your rifle.

Just my .02. I'm curious what others think about the handgun idea for you.
