.223 bolt. .22 Mag bolt. And, sorry, .22 LR bolt. These are real guns and you'll end up gravitating towards one eventually anyway. You'll see...

Way to go txhillbilly, dont let those 308 guys fill some poor guys head with bull. I like the 30.06 got two. A remington 700, and a remington 1903 A3. Since the man already sounds like a remington man, I think he should stick with what he knows and get a remington 700 in the caliber he likes for long range, I my self for long range and I mean looooong range go with the 6.5x55 swedish, But I think a remington 700 in 223 would be an affordable target shooter.

Get a 22lr for cheap practice, and a cheap scope. 250-300$ with ammo. Then a savage, remmy, or win. For about 4-500$. Then spend as much as you can on a scope and ammo. You won't be disappointed.
