First centerfire rifle?

Ok so I just got into dear hunting this year during muzzle loader season. I want to get both and will eventually own both. It's between a lever in 30-30 win or a bolt gun in 30-06. I am torn each have passed the test of time a proven to do their job. Any thoughts?

Were you looking for a date?

Seriously

Just kidding with you above!

I personally am not a 30:30 fan. Get the '06, it will do anything the 30:30 can do plus a whole lot more.

What kind of ranges are you looking at? I would keep a 30-30 to 200 yards or less, and the .30-06 will reach out further. Both are excellent game getters.

I'm a fan of bolt guns, there is just something relaxing when you are shooting one. I agree with 30 06 it's great to hunt with.

you are correct, both are proven performers and would serve you well for deer hunting if used properly. given some more information on the environment you would be hunting in would be helpful. are the shots to be taken, more than 250 yards and more open? then go with the 30-06 in a bolt action, with a 3-9x40 or 4-12x40 scope. less than 200 yards and more brush or woods? go with a 30-30 with either open sights or a 2-7x40 scope. if on a budget, look for something used at a gun shop or pawn shop. sometimes you can score a really good deal if you shop around. good luck.

I will be mostly in Connecticut but have trips to Maine and Ohio next year!

I'd get the .30-06.

possibly the 30-06 with a 3-9x40 scope, with a 22" sporter barrel in marlin X7 series or the savage Axis series. you could get one new and buy a scope for less than $600 and have a very capable hunting rig. loaded with 140-150gr bullets will allow for longer shots when scope is down on the higher magnification, and use 160-180gr bullets and the scope at lower magnification for shorter, woods type hunting. the 30-06 can be very versatile in being a good all around caliber.

I would go with the odd 6 I have a model 70 in 06 and love it. If u want a cheap entry level bolt gun go with the TC Venture I have one in 300 win mag and it is great put a 4-12 with a 40mm scope on it for under 200 and u have a great rifle
