If you are really nervous after meeting the seller, you could ask to run this through an FFL. Of course, that won't tell you if the firearms are stolen; for that, you would have to enlist the local police department for an investigation. If i was the seller, i wouldn't be up for that.
IMO, do the trade, sell the beretta for a nice profit in the current market, and enjoy the S&W.

Check the barrel before you make the trade. Check out the 686 as well.

I will definitely be going over every inch of them. Im going to field strip the 92 and check the spring, guide rod, barrel and frame. Then gonna check the barrel, lock up, and finish on the 686

There is a sticky here somewhere about buying a used revolver, pretty good on what should wiggle and what should not.
