2 deer i would have lost if i wasnt a decent tracker w a major case of stubborn. 5 or 6 more that ran a LONG ways after taken a 30-30 bullet through the lungs that my friends have shot. Most of them rounds never even exited. All but 2 deer for sure were 110 yards or closer.

Hey marlinman, funny how it works out huh? All growing up I thought the 30/30 was the greatest gun ever. Dad had one and killed a bunch of deer with it, so naturally I thought that was the way to go. When my brother was old enough to go dad got him a 30/30. When I was old enough dad went up to the attic, pulled out this 25-06 I'd never seen or heard of before. I was pissed!! What the hell is this!!! Then when we went hunting and my brother couldn't hit anything past 200 yards and I could, (little brother wins!!!) I started to understand. My ol pappy knew what he was doing with that 25-06. I've since taken 4 deer, an elk, and hundreds of jack rabbits with that old 25. Just wish the "fancy" leupold (was only vx2, but compared to the old redfield that was on it sure seemed nice) I stuck on it hadn't taken a sh*t on me. Now I got nothin for the jack rabbits! Sure I could use a 22, but it doesn't turn them inside out ya know?

Ill stick w a round i know will kill them wo all the bs of them suffering and having to chase them. Calibers like 243, 270, 7 mm mag, and so on. Yes the 7 mag is to much gun for deer. So is almost all magnum rounds. Pistol magnum is a different story though.

I hunt everything fromp pronghorn antelope to moose with a .30-06. But I wouldn't feel under gunned with a .30-30. I've taken several deer and one cow elk with it. All clean kills. A couple of the deer managed to run 40-50 yards. Never had to track one.

I have, however, lost many good hours of hunting in tracking a wounded animal that some "wannabe" sniper wounded at 400-500 yards with his super-duper Remchester belchfire magnum.

Just out of curiosity what size and type of bullet did you use?

Ya i have shot animals that far but i always use good shot placement and good bullets. Like i said-its my personal experience that the caliber isnt good.

Default Dislike for certain calibers

I expect that I am almost alone in that I have no use for the 7 mm Rem.Mag. At best it has only a slight advantage over the 30-06 and is not in the same league as the .300 Win.Mag.
This is one cartridge that I would not buy a gun chambered for.

Can't say I've ever met a caliber that I didn't like.

To each his own, but That is what I ment by redundant. The 7mm Rem mag has over 1600fpe at 500 yards w/ a 160gr at 3000fps, is flatter shooting then a .30-06. The .30-06 w/ a 165 is at 1600 at 350 yards. The 300WM is equal w/ a 165 at 450 yards. You forget about BC.

I would not call 150 yards over the .30-06 slight. The .300WM has the advantage of heavier bullets that equate to longer distance. I am a big believer in getting as close as you can, so the .30-06 is an adequate cartridge as is 8x57.
