When I was a kid the 30-30 was a very popular cartridge. The lever-action rifles were used by a lot of people because they were small, light, easy to use and cheaper than most popular bolt-action rifles. For these same reasons the Win 94 was thought of as the perfect "starter" rifle for young hunters and shooters. Sure, the 94 was small and easy to use but they had quite a kick to them. I have had my 94 for 40 years and it still puts a bruise on my shoulder. Looking back I think the .243 would have been a much better "starter" cartridge/rifle for kids. I love my 94 but my Rem 788 in .243 with a scope is much more accurate and has less recoil. It was a great starter rifle for my daughter. I do think it is important that kids learn to shoot with open sights and a .22 LR is great for this.

I used to hate the 30-30.. Untill I discovered Trail Boss.. Just never understood why it kicks so bad, for being such a "small" .30.... Now that I "tamed" it, Its one of my favorites....

For unlogical one, its the .223/5.56, For no better reason than its not a .30/7.62, and none of the types of guns I like shoot it....

It isn't the caliber, it's the man behind the sights. The gun doesn't choose it's own bullet weight, bullet shape, or where it goes.

I do hate the "mystical aura" that some folks like to attach to certain calibers though. There are no magic bullets out there, regardless of what some joker with a typewriter puts in a gun magazine.

Your right some men are better than others, but any round that wont drop a deer inside of 100 yards after you punch three rounds through both lungs isnt a "good" deer hunting cartridge. To me 30-30 dang sure qualifies in that respect

What bullet were you using? I've never had a failure with the 150 grain Speers loaded to 2400 FPS.

Remember also that the .30-30 is a low velocity round, 2200-2400 FPS) and doesn't impart hydrostatic shock like a .30-06, (2700-2900 FPS) so it isn't going to drop an animal nearly as quickly with an equal hit. But it will get the job done, in my experience.

150 gr federal powershoks. We trailed her for half a mile. We waited 20 mins then started trailin her. Had to finish her off w my uncle 45 after standin there watchn her suffer for a few minutes. I have seen ALOT of deer shot w a 30-30 that shouldnt have ran 100 yards that ran 200 yards to a half mile from where they were shot. You can use your 30-30 all you like. Ill stick w a round i know will kill them wo all the bs of them suffering and having to chase them. Calibers like 243, 270, 7 mm mag, and so on. Yes the 7 mag is to much gun for deer. So is almost all magnum rounds. Pistol magnum is a different story though.

The other two were shot in the same day. One i shot 3 times at 75 yards and had to trail her for half a mile w three 150 grains federal powershoks through her lungs. The other i hit through one lung and the offside shoulder with a federal 180 gr vitalshok. i didnt find her till 3 days later. I shot her at 90 yards. Out of 9 bullets and 9 solid hits only 3 exited. All on the second doe.

That's bizarre. With a .30-30 I've killed two...one an average doe, the other a 12 pointer that weighed 175 dressed out. Both dropped like a feinting goat. 75 & 50 yds, respectively.

Use .308 nowadays, that one doesn't have any problems for sure.

I had a Model '94, I found it too small for me. .30-30 worked fine w/ standard fodder 150gr FP. Never had one go more then 20 yards. My buddy uses a '92 carbine in .45LC for the woods. If .30-30 sucks, .45LC should be religated to soda cans. I have taken my 1892 Rifle in .44-40, but have not blooded her yet on Whitetail. The .30-30 has taken more Whitetail in this country than any other caliber.

I think there is more behind it then the "stories" tell.
