Get a used Marlin 30-30,,,,if you look around they can be found in that price range. If i was in your shoes I would save my cash and buy a used Saveage Mdl 110, Rem. 700 etc and stay away from a new bargin rifle with little resale potential

depends on if its a good old one in a gun shop or new. I still use a 30 to 35 years old bushnell banner 2.5-10 on a 308 and still crystal clear . many new basics are not good by most big name brands. A s-1 sightron is a good basic scope, redfield revolution is good buy cost is climbing too.

Most of the low end scopes today are far better than the best scopes of 25 years ago. Yet people managed to kill deer with these inferior scopes. I can't see paying $250 for any scope. First time it drops from a tree or gets bounced to hard by a 4 wheeler it's toast. I do ok for myself but I can't afford a new $250 scope every season. If you can god bless you.

Different tastes, I guess.
I'd rather have a $100 rifle with a$1200 scope on it, than a $1200 rifle with a $100 scope on it.

Look for a used savage axis. A mosin nagant also makes a fine deer rifle when loaded with soft points.

Right now he is pretty much stuck with mosin nagant. Hunting season opens here in 2 weeks. WalMart has jacked their prices through the roof and you couldn't get near the gun counter today. After Chrstmas I he might find a deal for next season.
You will be far better off getting a mosin from a LGS than online. You can find one with a nice hex receiver and a laminated stock for around $130. All the serial numbers will match and if you know rifles you will find one that is unfired or fired very little. Then you have to deal with sighting it in. Or you can take your $250 and get a nice 12 ga pump with a rifled slug barrel. It's up to you.

I would rather have iron sights than try to hunt with a target scope. Most deer are killed with in 50 yard in the the eastern US. When the day comes I need a scope to kill a deer I will give my rifles away to my nephews and cousins. I do use scopes but I don't need a scope. Every rifle I own has open sights on it. If the scope breaks or something goes awry I can take the scope off and go hunting,

My step Dad has taken several deer each year for the past 7-10 years or so that he's been back into hunting.
Hasn't had to make a shot longer than 30 yards yet. I'm trying to convince him to use a pistol. But he won't do it yet, because he wants to get a few with his bow and muzzle loader first.
