For $500, you could get an excellent used Remington 700 or Winchester model 70.

.308 is an excellent caliber, but 6MM Remington, .243, 257 Roberts, 7MM mauser, .270 Winchester, .30-06 etc are also excellent.

The problem is a scope. anything worth owning is going to cost at least $250.

The K-Mart blue light special for $149.95 is a waste of money.

You also might want to consider the Marlin 7xl or 7xs in .243, .308, .25-06, or.270. I have one in .25-06 and it is a lot of rifle for the money. Mine shoots sub-moa.

I see nikon scopes that aren't refurbished or used for under $200. Bushnell makes a decent scope for around $100.

Not everyone needs a 12x50 scope with adjustments to see moon rocks.

I have a 3x9 NcSTAR scope on my 10/22. I haul it around on 4 wheelers and on horseback. Yet I have no problem hitting a 1.5" target at 40 yards. The scope stays on target. You mean that type of shooting is unacceptable? I only want to plink and shoot small game. I have no intentions of blowing away Olympic records.

I have 2.5 fixed power scope on my shotgun. It has a well. shotgun trigger at 30 yards it just drills a 1.5" sight in bullseye. Yes, some of the shots are touching the black. Deer are smaller than that? They look a lot bigger around here.

stevens 200 in 308 but you will need more money, 300 bucks + scope base and scope. Or find a dogged out beater for sale.

Depending where you're hunting in bush country, a Winchester or Marlin lever in .30WCF or .35 Rem off the used rack, In open country hard to beat the .308 or 30/06 a used Savage bolt or Remington pump would work
