My point exactly. If you only can have two, make them different. I am lucky to have .308, 30-06, and .303, amongst others. The more the merrier. The OP seemed to desire a larger caliber and at present .308 is hard to come by and 30-06 is easy to get.

The 270 is probably the most popular non military round and it is an excellent hunting cartridge. A little less recoil than the 30-06, accurate and flat shooting. You would probably find some 270 if you went to an out of the way country store. You would also find 30-06 and 30-30.

i agree that in this scenario the 30-06 is a very viable option. it's factory loaded ammo selection is second to none and it is the daddy of the 308! i am fortunate to have both the 30-06 and the 308, and if i had to make a choice between them, it would be difficult, but i would probably lean towards the 30-06, if push came to shove.

i have a 30-06 and a 270 both in older Remington M700's. the 270, (circa 1969 vintage) and the 30-06, (circa 1971 vintage) and both weigh closely the same and i can affirm that in my rifles, the recoil of the 270 is a bit sharper. both have the same type aftermarket walnut stocks, identical recoil pads that i installed. i am not saying this is the case with all 30-06 and 270 rifles, just what i have observed with mine.

The '06 has an extensive range of ammunition available. As far as ammunition being available, it's everywhere. Any '06 shortage is going to be mostly surplus ball, not hunting ammo.

Disclaimer: I have to admit that I'm partial to the caliber.

the 300 Savage was the inspiration for the 308, but the 30-06 was the parent cartridge.

the 30-06 is the younger brother of the 30-03! so, 30-03 is actually Mr. 308's uncle!
