The 257 Roberts is a wonderful cartridge and easy to like. Your action is certainly longer than necessary but it will still work. The only problem you have at all is that it is difficult to build a compact rifle when you start with an action long enough for a 375 H&H.
The short Model 70 is perfect for a 257 since it is longer than a Remington yet shorter than a Mauser.
If I was going to build a 257 on a long M70, I would block the magazine and get hold of a shorter follower just to ensure good feeding. I would also chamber the 257 with a bit longer throat so I could utilize all the case capacity. I would lean toward a 22 inch barrel and make it slim. I'm not a fan of fluting although it has made me some money over the years. There is no demonstrable advantage to it and I'm not a real fan of the look. GD

It is what it is! It appears the long action and if .270 it is the long action. Be a shame to go shorter cased cartridge and block the magazine. Nothing wrong with 25-05. I built one on a 1917 Winchester action years ago when they were deemed a wildcat and Remington adopted it. Seems the Douglas Supreme barrel was 1 in 10 and I used only the 80 to 120 grain bullets that covered varmits to deer. Much better bullets are available today. Any custom barrels for personal use get sent to Pac Nor, right here in southern Oregon. Many good barrel makers out there, but consider his in the top. In fact I found out that they make all the barrels for Noslers custom rifles that are sub 1/2 minute hunting rifles minimum. Their rifles are spendy, but get what you pay for sometimes. Not a stainless, but also the proud owner of a pre 64 Winchester Mod. 70 Featherweight in 30-06 caliber. A new buy in the early 60s (62). It is one that will remain until cold dead hands get opened and it will need a new owner!

Hey Shortbolt, what kinf of scope is that on there you're rockin? I have been in the market for something a little nicer than the Bushnell on my AR. The only reason I ask is because you said that you may be looking to sell it? I am looking for something with at least 4-16X. Hit me up. Thanks!

I've heard the .25-06 before, but a 6.5-06 is better. Bullet choice is a big factor.
6.5-06 is very close to a .264 Mag without the barrel burn.
