The Marlin X7VH in .308 is good for the money. Welcome to the forum. For deer I suggest staying in the .30 cal range with at least 2000 foot pounds of energy. You really only need half that, but a deer that's DRT (dead right there) is much more desirable than one you have to chase.
.308 makes one hell of a varmint round too.
We use a Savage 116FSS in .30-06 and a Marlin 336SS. These are $700 guns, but they make models in the same action that are nearly half that price.
