Cheap 7.62x54 ammo? For how long?
Just bought my first Mosin and I saw an interesting review of the VEPR Dragunov that Atlantic sells in 7.62x54.

Does anyone have any indication from any of the ammo wholesalers and suppliers of how long the supply of cheap 7.62x54 ammo will hold? I plan on buying a few thousand rounds but since it is not reloadable, how long the supply holds for is of concern if I was to buy an expensive rifle like the VEPR.

I know, who knows? They have obviously made a lot of ammo, but I am curious of any of you think it will dry up in the next few years? Perhaps buying the more expensive rifle in 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 might be smarter if I want something with a cheap ammo supply for the next decade or so?

The cheap surplus ammo cost is a moot point,

if you're shooting for accuracy.

You will be buying the boxer-primed brass

rounds and reloading it anyway...

Who says we will be allowed to have guns or ammo in 10 years? We may be sol come November judging by the polls.

It is still being imported in large amounts. Until that changes, (or until legislation changes it), I suspect the price will hold. Right now the supply is staying ahead of the demand. I doubt that will change the way it can with 7.62 X 39 MM, because few rifles today used by modern armies use the 7.62 X 54 MM. Tens of millions of AK used worldwide use 7.62 X 39 MM.

Why is about every "AK-style" 7.62x54 called a Dragunov, when they have nothing but the round in common with them...

I almost got excited, until I seen the review... :(

Yeah, I know, but that is what Atlantic calls it. I call it a VEPR.

The 7.62X54R is still used as a medium machine gun cartridge by the former Warsaw Pact nations, and is likely to be around for a while.

However, you DO understand that you are asking for a future forecast, and my crystal ball is in the shop again (needs McPherson struts and some muffler bearings)

At one time, there was this bottomless ocean of milsurp 6.5 Jap, 6.5 Carcano, .30 Carbine, and .303 Enfield. Guess what? There was a bottom, and we have reached it. If you find something you really like, buy a lifetime supply of it- because they are going to quit making it.

The 7.62x54R is reloadable- it is just that the cheap milsurp is not (easily) reloadable. As the man said- if you are looking at significant accuracy, you are not going to be shooting light Czech ball anyway.

But while it is cheap, get some. Get some more. Stack them. Cover with a sheet of plywood and a table cloth, stack books on it, add a lamp. 8mm Mauser is in the same category.
