Which caliber for varmits?
Hey guys im looking into getting a new rifle for varmit hunting...22 mag isnt cutting it anymore.  The calibers im looking at are .223 or .22 250. So which one should i get based on performance, ammo prices, and ammo avalibility. Thanks for your help in advance.

You want to shoot reloads? Or off the shelf ammo? What ranges? How big of a critter are we talking about here? Groundhogs? Coyotes?

Give CCI stingers a try, they worked for us in years past. Before we found them my dad used his 308 a few times.

No i wont be reloading...to much work but i wish i had the time to. I could be shooting out to maybe 300 yrds. Im looking to take coyotes and some whistle pigs with it.

Your on the right track, 22-250, .223, .204 Ruger, 6.8 SPC, 17 HMR. It pretty comes down to budget and what trips your trigger.

For ammo availability...223 all the way. You have MUCH more variety from 40 gr to 80 gr. 300 yards the .223 is all you will need.
.22-250 will have more oomph at 300 but at the cost of much more recoil and limited ammunition choices/availability. If you were saying 4-500, I would say .22-250 or 6mm Rem.

I would have to agree with Robo. In that range, and with that criteria, I think that 5.56/.223 is going to be a better all around fit for your needs as described.

Don't over look the .204 Ruger. Getting more and more popular and an extremely flat shooting round. Not sure how the price vs .223 compares.

Another vote for the .223. It's good on groundhogs & coyotes out to about 400 yards before it starts to lose steam. If you was shooting 400-600 yards the 22-250 would be better.

To continue this conversation....which, in y'alls opinions, is the better round...the .22-250 or the 6mm Rem? Cuz I may be looking at one or the other.
