I am going to be buying a new rifle for target shooting. I was wondering if anybody could help out on which caliber I should get, either a 223 or a 270.

If you are just looking to punch paper accurately the .223 will be the most cost effective option. Also thereare a lot more options in accurate match ammo for the .223. None that I can think of in .270 and last but not least a long shooting session with a mild recoiling .223 is a pleasure. A long shooting session with your average .270 is not.

.223 gets my vote as well. for target shooting it will b elow recoil easy to shoot and accurate. cheaper to shoot as well

.223 is the easy choice if you don't care to ever hunt with this rifle or care about shooting longer than 300-400 yards. Much cheaper to feed the .223 and far easier to find it anywhere.

I have to agree, if hunting isn't in the picture, a .270 would be a waste.

So, another vote for .223...

I have both and use both for hunting However if I were only going to be punching holes in paper the .223 is the answer. If hunting is in the picture then the .270 is the answer. Mine particularly likes the 140gr SST Superformance by Hornady and will put bullet after bullet through the same hole at 100yds so although more expensive it is a viable target gun as well. Just my $0.02

I'm given to understand the .270 gives a very flat trajectory at

long distances, compared to .308 or 30-06.

But the additional expense just for punching paper

seems a little over the top...

If you are just going to punch paper then go with the .223. But beware of wind drift even at 100 yrds.

The difference is negligible and there is no commercial match ammo or match bullets made for the .270. That's why you never see a .270 in competition.
