Mosin it is guys. Thanks for all the help. I know where I can get one that has already had the bolt conversion, synthetic stock and scope for $250...I had one before and had over that in the drilling and tapping the scope mount and putting the bolt kit on it. if I can get close to a thousand rounds for it for under $200 and the gun for $250, that will leave me with over $500 for 357 and 45 ammo. I have a guy who reloads 357 for $16 a box of 50 with my choice of bullet. I'm going that route.

If you do decide that it is the intermediate cartridge in a semi that you want.....do yourself a favor and check out the SKS . you can still find them for $299

Holy crap... I forgot about the SKS option!! Good rifle w/ plenty of customizing option parts on the market.

I haven't seen an sks for less than 499 around here for a while. And my ex wifes cousin has an sks paratrooper that takes ak mags...if I went with an sks I would have to have one of them...

Now, if you do NOT own an "intermediate" cartridge semi auto rifle then I understand adding one too your battery "while you can"... Who knows what will ultimately happen... and if the SHTF it will be worth every penny...

...but still, for 1k a decent Mosin and enough ammo for it to hold off a Battalion is probably the better financial decision.

If you find a new SKS that too is a decent(er) option.

The 91/30 Mosin (especially the hex reciever WW2 issue long version) will get the hog job done, trust me.

The Hex receiver was phased out in 1936, they were used during WWII, but not "new" issue. All 91/30's are rifles, not carbines.

An SKS will work. More accurate then an AK47.

If it were me, I would then (not now) get the AK and some ammo, and start saving my money for a Mosin!
