Target rifles as a general rule are heavy and are a PIA to carry around for possible many hours around the woods and hills while hunting. Use of a biathalon sling can take alot of the weight issue out of carrying it for extended periods during hunting, however, a lighter hunting rifle is desirable by most hunters.

I got this rifle at a decent price and it shoots pretty straight. I can shoot the dime-sized groups at 100 yards easy enough. It is the Savage 10FLP, which is the left-handed version of the 10FP.

As others have suggested, the Remington 700 is a great choice. Dick's Sporting goods has a Black Friday Special for a 700 ADL Varmint (bull barrel) for $349 net ($449 on sale with a $100 mail on rebate). Get a good stock and scope-the package comes with a Bushnell 4-12 included.

I bought this same gun last month in 308 to do just what you are looking to do. Plan to get one in .243 next Friday at that price.

95sniper ruger m77 or the 77 mkII. I have used a MKII for around 20 years . It has had many upgrades over time but. Great rifle for long shots.

i have owned and shot many of the older M77 Rugers, in several different calibers. i actually prefer the older M77's over the Mark II M77's.

the older M77's with the tang safeties are pretty close copies of the Mauser action and are excellent rifles. never owned one that wasn't accurate and that was with factory ammo, as i didn't even reload years ago.

my current M77V is chambered in 280 Remington. found it earlier this year at my LGS. extremely accurate and was in very good condition, despite it being made in 1978. has a 26" heavy barrel and no sights on the barrel. more than likely someone special orderd the rifle in this configuration.

Ruger is the only manufacterer that i know of still offering a 280 Rem. chambering right now.

Defiantly Remington 700. You can get an ADL model between $400-$500 with a low end scope already on it. They are probably the most customizable bolt action rifle out there, not to mention the military and police use them so thats got to be worth something.
