i have owned and shot many of the older M77 Rugers, in several different calibers. i actually prefer the older M77's over the Mark II M77's.
the older M77's with the tang safeties are pretty close copies of the Mauser action and are excellent rifles. never owned one that wasn't accurate and that was with factory ammo, as i didn't even reload years ago.
my current M77V is chambered in 280 Remington. found it earlier this year at my LGS. extremely accurate and was in very good condition, despite it being made in 1978. has a 26" heavy barrel and no sights on the barrel. more than likely someone special orderd the rifle in this configuration.
Ruger is the only manufacterer that i know of still offering a 280 Rem. chambering right now.
