Default Budget hunting/long range target rifle

When it comes to bolt rifles I am a newbie, I am looking for a decent priced .308 rifle that has a large choice of after market upgrades. I want to use it for hunting but not just throw it in the safe when not season. I really want to get into long range target shooting as another hobby. What do you guys...and girls, think would be my best bet. Either new or used

Savage is easy on the wallet and a great hunting rifle. But you can get a nice used 700 for the same price and a better rifle

I am going to look for used 700. Is a bull barrel a good idea?

Not an issue for hunting where I'm out in the woods but for long range I would consider it

the Remington M700 platform has one of the best aftermarket support of all rifles with maybe the exception of the Mauser rifles. there are many, many parts and accessories for the M700.

makes a fine rifle to build off of as well. but just a bit of advice on this. personally i would make it for one use or the other. as a general rule, target rifles are not the best choice for hunting and hunting rifles are not the best choice for target shooting.
