Ruzai, give some thought to the marlin XS7 308 or the 7mm-08. i have both, and my 7mm-08 wears a swift 6-24x50 scope and has no clearance issues with the bolt hitting the scope. BTW, the trigger is adjustable on the marlins. these are very accurate and nice shooting rifles. i also have one in 25-06 and plan on replacing my 30-06 with a marlin in the future. my marlin 308 wears a 8-32x50 swift scope. it is the XS7VH w/ the 26" heavy barrel, very accurate rifle! just my two cents!

Recommended:

Marlin XS/XL7
Savage (available with DM)
Tikka T3 (comes with DM)
Howa / Weatherby Vanguard

OK, but not worth considering given the alternatives:
Mossberg

Don't even think about it:
Remington 710/770

Unless it has to be new, my suggestion is to go to as many local gun shops as you can and look at their used rifles. You will find a huge variation in calibers and styles. Find something you like an make a fair offer.

As a general rule, sporting/hunting rifles don't get shot much. The stocks and metal may show some dings and scratches from the woods, but they are generally mechanically excellent. Unless someone didn't properly care for it and let it rust, in which case, you'll just pass and keep looking. Often they are already scoped. There are deals to be found and the money you save can go to ammunition or a better scope.

Guys, I appreciate the feedback. But the thread was originally to find my father a hunting rifle. Found one, it was the Marlin XL7 in 30-06.
I'm working on a detachable box mag 338 Win Mag rifle in school. We're required to go with Remington or Howa and I went with Remington. I cant wait till its finished and I can shoot some steal at 800 yards.
I got the chance to shoot some steel at 600 yesterday and me being blind as a bat actually hit it in 3 shots only using a 15 power scope.

Ruzai, good choice on rifle! i have the marlin XL7 in 25-06 and enjoy shooting it a lot. very accurate and recoil is not bad. i plan on replacing my mossberg atr100 in 30-06 with another marlin soon. man just do without a 30-06!

I did not read through the entire post, but after extensive research I will be picking up a TC Venture. $479 at Dick's plus a $50 rebate seems like a great deal to me. Also worth mentioning is that my price range was up to $800 w/out optics. Some would call me nuts, but the TC Venture just feels the best to me.

The rifle feels excellent and is backed by a life time warranty, so if something does break TC will get it fixed up for you.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree. Got a 30-06 savage axis, straight out if the box I am hitting 1.5 inch groups at 100-150yards. Rifle is ready for the season.
