to be new, my suggestion is to go to as many local gun shops as you can and look at their used rifles. You will find a huge variation in calibers and styles. Find something you like an make a fair offer.
As a general rule, sporting/hunting rifles don't get shot much. The stocks and metal may show some dings and scratches from the woods, but they are generally mechanically excellent. Unless someone didn't properly care for it and let it rust, in which case, you'll just pass and keep looking. Often they are already scoped. There are deals to be found and the money you save can go to ammunition or a better scope.
