Savage has allot of rifles to fit your needs I would start out with a 223 lots of options in rifles every thing from light hunter to heavy target light triggers 6oz.to 3lb 1/7twist to 1/9 go with 1/7 it will shoot any size bullet 40gr up to 90gr I had one in a 1/7 and shot it at 1k need to reload for that but it is a factory rifle I only bedded it but they have other options

Take a look at Howa1500 stainless, great value shoots as good as the rems and savages and you can get lots of stocks to suit your tastes. If shooting range, get a heavy barrel, if hunting go for the sporter. Remington has more customization. Best thing to do is go down the range, get friendly with folk and shoot theirs then you will have a better understanding of what your looking for. Have fun.

Not to get off topic..I find the difference for plinking, US made .40 and 9mm is only $3-4 a box of 50.

So I've started looking into the Rger mini 14 and mini 30. Any views on the two?

If you get a mini make sure it is of the newer 580 series. Howerver, it is not as accurate as a AR type gas rifle. Either rifle, for that matter, any auto rifle, is not a good long range rifle IMO.
