I find it kind of surprising the Mossberg kicks so bad, I have a Savage 111 30-06 and even at full stroke 180gr handloads it is a rather mild recoiling rifle despite the fact that it has the same fit and weight as the ATR. I guess you have to chalk that up to Savages very nice recoil pad.

i kind of thought it strange as well, but after i was on the forum for a while, i noticed others having had the same problem as i did with that rifle in regards to recoil. so mine wasn't the only one after all. i had wondered if mine had some sort of problems maybe with headspacing, but nothing was showing it had any problems there.

the Mossberg ATR100 is a rifle i recommend in 30-06 for hunting. very reliable and solidly built and very decent as far as accuracy. but not a rifle for extended range seesions as is. in a way, i kind of wish i had it back so i could try out one of the Boyd's laminated stocks to see if it help with recoil.

The 30/06 is a stout cartridge but it's not that bad. The Mossberg didn't fit axxe so the recoil was not spread through the butt of the gun. Back in the 80's savage sold a rifle that is similar to todays scout rifles. I bought one chambered in 270. The stock was small, like it was made to fit a child. Just a couple shots made me want to cry. On top of that it put my face so close to the scope I got whacked by the scope several times. I managed to sell the rifle and recover most of my money.

the stock did fit me. i have owned a boatload of 30-06 rifle over the years. i think i have a fair understanding of how they shoot and how the recoil feels.

I'm with axxe, I have an ATR in .308 and my cousin has one in 06 that I shot a couple times and both recoiled way more than any gun I've ever shot in either caliber. Not really sure why but its really beating the hell out of mine....the cheap rings don't help any either

for strictly a hunting rifle, i highly recommend them as they are accurate and well made rifles. just not pleasant for long shooting sessions.

i may get another one one day and play around with it some and see if i can fix the recoil problems. three shot groups at 100 yards with mine were amazing to say the least.

my 30.06 has a soft push of a recoil, and I could shoot it all day, (if I could afford to)

What 06 do you have Anna? Some rifles just seem to handle recoil better, I used to have a 7mm Rem Mag that would bruise anyone who dared pull the trigger on it including my magnum junkie friends, it left me black and blue for several weeks after shooting it, never seen anything like that, never been so happy to be rid of a gun.

I have a Remington 700 ADL chambered in 30-06 with a Pachmayr recoil pad on it. It has a decently soft recoil. Try adding a good recoil pad to yours, it might help a lot.

It is my fathers first hunting rifle, an Eddystone 1917 30.06 with a 28 inch barrel and weighs 10 pounds Watching someone shoot it it does look like it kicks hard, because of the barrel rising up and pushing you backwards, but its like a hand on your shoulder and just pushing, not like a slam. Also hold 6 rounds in tha magazine

Sorry about the bad pic:
