Get her dirty, then clean her so she starts to respect you. When her trust is complete, she will serve you well for a lifetime!

Yes it will take a bipod. Of those options I'm rather partial to the Wetherby Vangard in .308 for a good solid all around hunting rifle. I've owned two of those in .308, both exceptional shooters that I ended up selling to buddes that were getting into deer hunting and wanted a nice cost effective rig.

Default new rifle

Nathan: Everyone has their own opinion on what is the best caliber, I'm 71 and have taken countless deer, several bear, and other varmits with a Savage model 99F lever action in .308. I really like the caliber, many re-load possibilities. Like some other guys said, don't overlook a good used rifle in either .308 or 30-06, plenty of ammo available and it will take down anything you run into in the US. I agree with Wambli, the Weatherby Vanguard in .308 will be hard to beat as a fair priced hunting rifle. My neighbor bought one when they first came out and uses nothing else. Good luck.

I suggest a Marlin XS in 7mm-08. Fairly low priced rifle with a nice adjustable trigger that should provide you with good accuracy right out of the box. Buying the Marlin would allow you more money for a decent scope. The 7mm-08 is a good hunting cartridge and its recoil is nothing to worry about.
