Having own(ed) some different rifles including 5.56, 308, 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag, and 416 Rem Mag, my experience is other than in AR's, I go with the 30-06 for single all around round. And I still have quite a stash of the old Hornady 165 gr Light Magnum rounds that shoot dead to nuts out of my 700CDL with Zeiss 3.5-10X44 Conquest. Don't know how that round compares to their new Superformance rounds but my buds thought I was shooting a much larger rifle when I used that combination in Uvalde a couple of years ago. Spun the 5 year old around in his tracks at 100 yards, before he went down where he stood, with a behind the shoulder shot. I have some 180 gr Lgt Mag rounds for bigger stuff when the time comes. Truly a good all in one caliber, although the 416 Rem Mag was what I wanted for facing a large brown at close range.

i would have to pick the 458 winchester magnum pushing a hornady 350 grain soft point at 2000fps. been using that load since 1986 on whitetail. never had a problem with them not dropping dead where they stand.
.458cal hole in each side very little meat damage

.308
Thought I'd posted it woulda been the .30-06 but the .308 is effectively, almost, the same only in a short action. Lotta versatility. Now, for an overall North American round the .30-06 Ackley Improved is the .308 Magnum!

Simply put, there is no best, tons of research will prove me right. There are good calibers for every circumstance, range, terrain, etc. but there is no best. Some may believe the .30-06 is the best, but I must disagree, it's a good general purpose round, but their are rounds out their that beat it in certain situations, as I previously stated. Any comments?
