Best gun for long distance shooting and mobility
 

I know nothing about guns, but I am willing to learn. I want to purchase a gun for long distance shooting, but I want to be able to carry the gun for lengths without tiring or without it being a hassle. I was watching Top Shot and they featured the LaRue Tactical OBR. That would be perfect, but I don't think it has the range I am looking for. I want to be able to hit targets at 400-500 yards accurately. Is there a gun that allow for such a shot? Or is the LaRue Tactical OBR capable of such a shot?

Yeah the LaRue is capable if that's what you want. Stop by the intro section and tell us a little bit about yourself when you get a chance.

There are lots of gun designs that are capable of doing what you want. The difficulty is deciding what else you want / don't want in a rifle.

I would suggest getting a .22 and learning to shoot before you spend the money you would need to get the gun your asking about. I'm not trying to discourage you from buying the gun you want just trying to make sure the gun you buy really is what you want.

You may want to select a cartridge which will accurately

shoot the distance, then find a gun which will shoot it

which fills your qualifications.

Would you be hunting? Depending on where you live, many states require

a maximum of a 5 shot mag for a semi-automatic.


You probably want to be approaching MOA at 100 yards, first.


400-500 yards is a very respectable distance for any shooter with any gun, me included.

You'll have difficulties finding a public range over 100 yards, but they exist.

You may want to embrace a bolt-action with a synthetic stock, scope,

and the standard narrow barrel for this type of accuracy and portability at that

range.

Assault weapons depend on squads or platoons, all firing in unison, to

hit a target at these ranges. The simple truth is these calibers, and weapons

are designed for short battlefields. Since WWII, designers and armies

have been embracing a higher rate of fire at shorter distances. Arguably, some may

be able to hit the target at 500 yards, with one of these weapons, but their experience

certainly exceeds mine.

Yeah there's been a few to say the least!

I always wonder, are they going to be wandering around

hunting using telescopes to spot their prey?

Because at 300 yards plus, most animals

blend in with the scenery.


Not to mention what a rifle and ammo which reach

out this far cost...

PM sent . There is a big difference between what sounds like a hunting rifle that can kill effectively at 500 yards and what can place bullets well on paper at 500 yards. A 223 can do that.

Yeah, a 223 can put bullets on target at 500 yards.
A 308 can also do it very well with a larger/heavier bullet.
So WHAT are you going to shoot at 500 yards?
