ok so i went to the range the other day to shoot a few rounds out of this oldie but nice looking rifle.... the range officer ask me what grain i was shooting (147 brown bears) and looked at me funny and suggested that i shud shoot heavier like 150 and up 180 being ideal.... now im a newbie to the gun world so im pretty impressionable esspecialy when he said id get a bolt in my face if i keep shooting the lighter grain bullets.... my question is if i shoot higher grain bullet wouldnt that put MORE pressure on the bolt???

It will depends on your twist or your barrel. the faster the twist the heavier the bullet you can shoot.

Take a cleaning rod and make a stright line down it with a sharpie. After doing that make one around the rod now. put a brass jag with a tight fitting patch on it. place that in the muzzle yes just be careful. push the rod down to your first mark and look where the stripe is make a small pen mark on crown of gun. Now push the rod down the the barrel until the stripe lines up with the mark on the crown. mark the cleaning rod at the muzzle and remove the rod. Now measure from mark to mark on the rod that is your twist.

In the 308 win the following twist will work for these weights

1:11" good for 168gr
1:12" will shoot up to 175gr
1:10" 175 gr to 190gr and up.

This also depends on your bullet too. Some bullets like the 180gr Beger VLD will shoot good in a 1:12" twist barrel so they say.

thanks sucks that i cant find a marker right now but i tried to see the twist with just the rod but i cant get it to do a full rotation to much patch i think or crapp and weak rod but ill def get it done.... i got to google ratios in the mean time lol thanks again.... do u think i could blow the bolt off if i say in the 150 160 range??

it all depends on how hot the rounds is loaded. With a commercial ammo that is not someting like Federal Light Mag ammo no i doubt it.

when we are talking about hot thats muzzle velocity or energy or both .... sorry this is all new to me

The higher the velocity the higher the energy if the bullet weight is the same.

Remington makes the reduced recoil rounds.

A heavier bullet may well have a higher bolt face thrust. The 1985 action was not intended for .308 pressures. This is a "small ring action" that lacks the third lug of the later large ring action.

I would handload 125-150 gr bullets well below max to not overly stress this 124 year old rifle.

For factory ammo, consider the 125 gr reduced recoil ammo.

I just got one of these rifles from SG, and plan to play with it some. Does anyone know if one of the dedicated Mauser forums has a lot of help/info on these? I'd like to find a cleaning rod for it and talk to some other people who have owned and shot them before.

A search here only came up with a couple threads regarding the Chilean 1895 Mauser...

1895 Mauser is a small ring 95 action. The were built in Germany for export, some also in Belgium, 7x57 Mauser. Quite a few countries re-barreled them for 7.62x51 Nato, not .308.
In many respects it is similar to the Spanish Civil Guardia, another 7x57 converted to 7.62x51. Used w/ the correct 147gr Nato round they will last a life time. Standard .308 ammo is not a good idea w/ these rifles.

If you are looking for parts, try Numrich or Sarco.
I have or have had 2- 95 action, 2- 93 action, 6- 96 action, and 5- 98 action Mauser Military rifles.
