The '06 has been killing everything on this continent for over 100 years now. Yes there are more powerful cartridges out there and they will surely stop and angry grizzly better than an '06 but as for hunting them, I'd say yes it is a pretty good choice. Use heavy bullets that are heavily constructed. You need penetration as well as tissue destroying expansion. Bullet placement is key as with all hunting. Put the right '06 bullet into a bear's boiler room and he isn't going far especially if you break a shoulder and even better break both shoulders. That's why you need the penetration. You want the bear down and not running away or toward you. You can always put another one in him after he's down.

Thank you, my point exactly

I must be the only who gets visited by Mr. Murphy around here.

Now here's what happens to me.

1.-I shoot, the bear moves at the same time, and I miss.

2.-The bear charges.

I will go out with another, or a team, but IF I go hunting bear, it

certainly won't be by myself, with just a 30.06.

Default Ouch...............

Go with a 416 double barrel, that will kill the bear, and put you safely in the hospital with a broken shoulder.........

For Decades one of the favorite Guide guns in Alaska was the Winchester Model 71 (lever action 5rd mag) in .348 WIN and a few converted to .405WIN.

The .348WIN is a 250gr slug at approx. 2400fps with approx. 3050ft-ibf

The .405WIN is a 300gr slug at approx. 2200fps with approx. 3200ft-ibf

The 30-06 is a 180gr slug at approx. 2700fps with approx. 2900ft-ibf
The 30-06 is a 220gr slug at approx. 2500fps with approx. 2980ft-ibf

I seriously doubt that if the guides in Alaska relied on the Model 71 in .348 or .405 as the backup gun that a 30-06 would have any trouble taking any but the biggest of Brown Bears.

All that said I am a 30-06 hunter I own 4 of them. I'm also in the process of building a .35 Whelen (.35 cal 30-06) to use as a Elk and Bear Rifle. based on a Savage 111 action.

Hi this is Trapper 1 I just realized that Jack O'connor shot and killed every big game animal in Africa with a 270 .Now a 270 is a necked down 30 06 cartridge. so more then the rifle you are using is placement of your shot . now saying all that. I would have a 338 with me . best of luck . and let us no how you make out .

My largest rifle caliber is a 30.06. IF, by some off-chance

I ran into a bear in the woods,

I would not feel naked, or under-gunned.

It's just, IF I went specifically HUNTING bear, (never happen)

I would get a muckety-muck-blar-de-blar Magnum, of some sort.
