Heavier HARD bullets. You need penetration with heads that retain their weight. I like the .30-06 Ackley Improved for Brown Bear hunting BTW.

I used to go bear hunting with a bow. My buddy backed me up with .460 Weatherby Magnum. He had to use it once and the bear went down fast! (Thank God)

A 30-06 will take down a grizzly. It's all on how your bullet performs and where you hit him at what distance. Although the bigger calibers will give you a little more room for error. 300 win, 338, but I noticed the most common bear caliber has not been mentioned. The 375 h&h. From what I hear it is the most common bear round. I wouldnt recommend a shotgun with slugs, yes they have a punch but no distance and you want a bullet with punch and that is going to penetrate through the animal.

I wouldn't feel uncomfortable in bear country with a 30.06.

But I would not go hunting for bear with a 30.06, either...

Davy Crockett made his living killing bears with a .48 flintlock, so I guess youll be good to go with an '06, bullet placement kills the target.

Has it occurred to you the reason Davy Crockett was famous

is because that's very difficult?

Ahh, what do I know? You'll have to come bear hunting with us,

sometime, with your 30.06, and show us how it's done.

No, he was famous for staring a bear down with a grin, killing a bear with a flintlock was pretty mundane, when men were men.

I'd be more comfortable with a 338 win mag or a larger bore, also shot placement matters a little less with a larger bore caliber.
