If you want to ship me that bolt you broke the tap in and i'll get it out for you. I've broken so many freakin taps that I almost consider myself a pro at it. PM me if you want to.

What process are you using to do the bluing? What was your prep procedure?

Well I have the birchwood Casey bluing kit and I used the degreaser to start. Then I degreased it again. Then a few more times and between each application I rinsed with water. After that I used the bluing remover and then rinsed it with water again. After that came more degreaser a couple more times, just to be safe. Then I hit it with the bluing and it came out streaky and not very dark, even after several coats. I should also mention I was wearing those nitrile gloves through the whole process, and after it not working the first couple times, I changed them between each chemical.

I'm guessing it was the brand. I've done one gun with the b.c. kit, and it turned out similar, but better. It's like the blueing was translucent, or what a tinted clearcoat would look like. I recommend starting over with a different brand.

Is there a brand you would recommend?

No, but others can. Have you tried searching the refinishing threads?

That is really interesting...how did you fit the bolt handle onto the bolt body? Did you weld it? I heartily agree with your statement in the original thread that it's not the destination that counts, it's the journey and that's exactly why I'm doing this project. It's a learning experience and I hope to take out some firsthand experience of some how to knowledge. I do believe that experience is the best way to learn.
