Any suggestions on the length of barrel I should put on the AR. Its going to be a long range gun, bull barrel for sure. I just don't know what length I should get. A friend of mine suggested an 18", feel free to tell me your opinions and even your AR set up if you have one.

Kind of depends on your definition of long range. If you are talking 200+ yards, 20-24"

I'd like to shoot longer than 200, but its hard to find places here in northern calif. A 20-24 not gonna hurt anything if i'm shooting under? 18" better for shorter range ir the same?

Longer barrel generally equals more weight, less portability, higher velocity. If just shooting vermin or paper at longer ranges portability is not an issue. The only advantage to a shorter barrel is portability.

I've heard of people taking their ARs hunting and i wouldnt mind seeing how it performs, so portability may be a necessity.

Get a 24" 1-8 twist Wilson Arms .223 wylde chambered bull barrel. They are afforable barrels compaired to douglas and kreiger. I have seen several of these shoot 3/4" groups with federal national match ammo and hand loads go well under 3/8" at 100 yards just check different handloads for basic accuracy and velocity. . The rifles were box stock rock river arms upper varment rifles with 2 lb triggers being the only change to them. One guy said his best bullet was the 80gr berger vld for 400 to 600 yards.

I was looking at some of the rock river stuff last night and was checking prices on dpms and cmmg. I'll definitely check it out. Right now I'm open to anything.

My selection would without a doubt be the Rock River Arms 20" A-4 Varmint Upper in the 1:8 twist stainless Wylde Chambered (5.56 Match Chamber) bull barrel. Can not beat their accuracy. Consistent 1/4 to 1/2 MOA. You can also get it in the (Optional Over molded Hogue Rubber Free Float Tube) which is fantastic. Comes standard with the good RRA 2 Stage NM Trigger, Rock River Hogue Rubber Pistol Grip and Free Float Tube with Sling Swivel Stud installed. You can also get one with all Green Hardware that makes the rifle a little different. Also with any AR that you are going to put a good sized scope on you will need a Scope Mount with Rings to allow the scope to be mounted more forward than the standard picatinny rail will allow. Like the RRA Cantilever Scope mount. ARO130T or ARO131T just for a reference to look at. Thanks for all the great info. I've been leaning towards the rock river varmint uppers for awhile now, but have my options open. I've been told by a few friends to look at RRA and it's probably what ill end up doing after all.
