DefaultAnyone own a M788 Remington?

I had one in .243 about 40 years ago. It got stolen. Anyway, it was the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. It didn't matter if I shot factory or reloads of any combination of powder or bullet weight I could find, it shot them all to under moa. Also, the point of impact changed very little from load to load. It did tend to stretch cases a bit, but I assume that was because of the bolt's rear locking lugs. In the 60's, when I bought mine, they were under $100 brand new. Now, they run around $600 or so if you can find one. Too bad they were discontinued.

A few buddy's of mine have one they are a good rifle, but only problem with them they stopped making a clip for them years ago. If you lose the clip you be lucky to find one if you do you paying over 80 or more dollars for it.

Yes, I own one. I bought my 788 in .243 in the early 80s for $200 on sale. It was a very accurate rifle right out of the box and over the years I have developed loads for it that produce dime-sized groups at 100 yards. I was once told that this rifle would never be very accurate because of the short (18 1/2 ") barrel and bolt with rear-locking lugs. I have proven otherwise many times. I have been very happy with this rifle and it is in outstanding condition.

A lot of them were torn down and their actions used by bench rest shooters. Remington should never have discontinued it.

More than one time I have used my 788 to shoot better groups than someone who was shooting a 700. This rifle will group as good as my Savage 10FP in .308. Right now I am using the 95-grain Hornady SST with 40.8 grains of H4350 as my pet load.

Boyds makes some laminate stocks for the 788 if you want to dress it up.

I have a 308 i bought new around 1976 i think. Great rifle still today an unlike so many rifle it was never picky about ammo. just flatty was a great shooter. Still have it. I thought I payed right around 100 bucks but if tthats what they cost in the 60's maybe not. maybe a bit more. Last ones I saw around here for sale were in the mid 400 dollar range.
