Another New Addition

I finally bought something that I have wanted for about 30 years. I got sidetracked on M1s, M1903s, M1As and the three Milspec 5rs, but finally came home with a Marlin .44 Mag carbine to complement my .44Mag and .44spl revolvers.
I started deer hunting again about 5 years ago and have been using M1A and the .308 Milspec 700 but they are heavy to hold in a small tree stand for several hours. Most shots are 100 yds or less so the carbine should be just the ticket.

Tomorrow will be a day at the range for its trial by paper. I will shoot some of my handgun reloads in it just to try it out. That will be a fairly mild mag with 255 gr. semi wad cutters. They shot well in my .444 so they should be as good in the .44. I will save the hotter jacketed loads for hunting since bullets are impossible to get these days.

I'm excited about it and can't wait to hear this little gun pop. Kinda crazy for a 69yo man isn't it?

You are not crazy at all. Great find. I wish Ruger never discontinued them.

I've also got a .308 Milspec 700, and having a carbine sounds like pretty good idea to me. I pick up a 700 BDL just to have something light when hiking is involved. :)

Why would ot be crazy Sir? Not at all -- wisdom comes with age. Nice combination!

Thanks guys for the replies.
I took the little gun to the range yesterday and zeroed the scope on the 25 yard pistol range. I then shot on the 50 just to center the hits and then took it out to 100 yds. Surprisingly enough it shot about a 2 1/2 minute group with the 255 gr. semi wad cutters I had loaded for my revolvers. I was quite satisfied. They won't function through the magazine, though.
I have about 100 rounds loaded with 240 Speer soft point jacketed and some Speer 240 jacketed hollow points that I will save for hunting. These function perfectly. They are probably close to 20 years old, but the SWCs were too and they still shoot good.
I think I will order a mould with a more rounded point to cast bullets since I have about 200 lbs of ingots left.
