The Savage model 10 & 12 series are great rifles. There's no reason for them to have a muzzle brake on either the 223 or 308,neither rifle has much recoil.
My model 12 223 is the best shooting rifle that I've ever owned, and I have a bunch of rifles. My model 10/110 25/06 & 308 heavy barreled guns shoot real close to it though.

Here is a Mosin Nagant 91/30 sniper that has some history to it.

History shows that a Russian sniper Vasily Zaytsev killed 225 soldiers and officers in the battle for Stalingrad around the end of WWII with one of these rifles.

The movie Enemy At The Gates was based on his efforts in that battle.

I own one of these rifles & even with my bad eyes it is easy to make good shots out to 300 to 350 yds.
Hunting with one of these rifles shouldn't be a problem & ammo is cheap.

I am starting to get into reloading, I think I would go with the 308 though.

Awesome flat shooting caliber. Good choice. Iv built ALOT of 308s and like them all. I'm more into exotic calibers though my favorite gun/caliber is a 308 more potent than any most people will ever find. 308 in a 338 win mag casing known as 7.82 warbird

What kind of automatic? Because unless the 06 is a m1 garand NO 308 kicks harder than an 06.....at least none I've ever seen

Both of the rifles are remington 740's I had several people shoot them because I thought I was crazy, they all said that the .308 kicked harder.

I have several 740s and I have noticed heavy recoil out of the 308s-2 of em-but since I'm so used to magnum levels of recoil didn't think much of it.
