Default AK or AR?

I got in to guns almost exactly a year ago. I have been unable to buy them for myself because I am not old enough so I just gave my dad the money and had him buy them. In one month I will be turning 18 so I decided to buy myself either an AK or an AR. I only want to spend $800 at the most. Any opinions on what you think would be the better choice would be greatly appreciated. I am currently leaning towards the AK because I hear a lot about them being reliable and requiring less maintenance. Will I be able to find anything new from a factory in my price range?

Ya can easily get an ak for 800 the Romanian ones are going down here in South Texas for right at 600 out the door. On the other hand an AR on the cheap end is about 800. I have owned both and currently own an AR. I don't like aks because they are more inaccurate than ARS and the recoil from an AK will stsrt to hurt your shoulder. I could shoot an AR all day and my shoulder will be fine. Also there are not near as many accessories and attachments for AKS as there is for ARs. If your trying to stay with in 800 get your self an AK a case and 300 rounds of ammo, save the AR for when you have steady cash flow.

I've got several ARs and one AK clone. I'd go with the AR,

I own a couple ak's and Ak patterned guns. Don't own any AR's, they're not my favorite... Accuracy isn't a valid argument unless your shooting competition. Ak's are more than capable of minute of man at 300 yards on irons. If your recoil shy, buy a 5.45 instead of a 7.62. 5.45 will shoot right with a 5.56 too.

For me it is a combo of familiarity, ergonomics, accuracy, modularity of the AR that pushes me toward them.

There are a lot of AR's on the market right now and prices start at about $600. AK's used to be cheaper but they have gone up. AR's are not unreliable and they are usually more accurate. The main advantages of the AK are the heavier bullets and they shoot cheap steel cased ammo very well. Some AR's will shoot steel and some wont.
CDNN is selling a Bushmaster A3 for $700 and there is a $50 rebate. Comes with some extras. They also have a Colt CSR1516 light carbine for $700. Add $15 for shipping. PSA had an AR last week for $450. Buds has a S&W AR for $604.

Wow I didn't relize the prices had gotten that low again. I remember 2 years ago when the whole ammo crisis was stsrting, you couldn't find a bushmaster for under 1000.
