The 308 is the parent case for the 7mm08 and 243.
.308in = 7.62mm
.284in = 7mm
.243in = 6mm
7mm uses a .284" diameter bullet. The .308 uses a ....308" diameter bullet. The .308 is larger, but the 7mm-08 is simply a "necked down" .308
