John, Even with my experience, i'm not sure I would undertake maintaince like that without some serious instruction. I have a RRA 16" 9MM AR, I'm looking for something with a 9"-12" barrel. the only reason i'd even given thought to the Hi-Point or the Kel-Tec is their inexpensiveness(Hi-Point) and their portability(Kel-Tec). Neither offers the user "Everything" in a Smaller Carbine footprint. The Hi Point, even with Ext. Pro Mags, is still only 15 rd. Capacity.
The Kel-Tec is Light and folds in Half,..but no rail means no Optics!!! If I want a "9MM Carbine" with no Optics i'd get a Cobray M-11 and get a Longer Barrel,..or Pony UP the $700 for a TNW AERO...

You could pony up the money for an indexing front hand guard that takes rails and turns so you can fold it.

If I was going to spend more than Hi Point money I would get the Beretta. The local sheriffs dept has a couple Berettas. They abuse those guns to no end, they just keep shooting. The Berettas get oiled when they are assigned to another officer. Then they get thrown in the trunk. They have not broke and they just keep shooting.

I was not impressed by the Beretta when I first saw it. In fact, I thought the Hi Point was a superior weapon. After I have seen the abuse a Beretta will take and still function they have won me over.

That Beretta uses Storm mags? I have older Beretta's. I wanted the Kel-Tec because it can be made to accept Beretta 92/M9 mags instead of Glock...

Beretta has a CX4 that takes 92F mags. Buds has them without the top rail for $670. Top rail kit is an extra $60+. The 1st carbines had some teething problems but they addressed the issues.
A couple days ago I passed up a Sub 2000 for Glock mags. $400.

The cheapest I have seen the Storm Carbine here is $729, and unless we come into some sort of winfall or Disability comes through, no new guns(at least not to keep-I can get as many Test guns as I want, But i still have to pay what I decide to keep!), already have 2 new ones...

By the time you add the top rail, you are at the same price. Then there are the 357 magnum carbines. Not semi auto but a lot more powerful. No mags to lose on the revolver or the rifle unless you get the Ruger bolt.

The Sheriff Department beretta's use 92fs magazines. They just have 15 round magazines. If the deputies are going to get into a firefight 15 rounds is enough. They have no plan of shooting their way out of the situation. They will just be a distraction until help is in position.
