I don't know about cheaper. Maybe it's more available in bulk:

5.56x45mm Lake City M855 FMJ 62 Grain Steel Penatrator 1000 Loose Bulk Case 3025 FPS

The Russian steel case .223 is pretty cheap.

even with the .17hmr your still looking around $0.25 @ shot . its tough to get much cheaper ammo than the .223 ammo besides .22 lr

Nick if you dont mind building your own lower which really isnt that hard to do and takes less than 30 min and you own a few small tools to do it with small hammer, punchs and allen wrenches , you can have a good quality AR From $579-$700 from Palmetto State Armory
The link below should take care of what im talking about
You just need to figure out how and for what your going to use it for based on the barrels , lengths and profiles

I load up on 556 whenever there's a "sale" from some place like cheaper than dirt. I'll order a boatload of LC when it's on sale - the UPS guy hates me.

Personal preference I suppose. My go to's are 16 inches. My target is a 20 inch bull.

Im a short barrel AR guy myself I like the 16" which should get you plenty of accuracy out to 300 Yds , My longer distance gun out to 500 is a Savage bolt gun 22" barrel , if I cant get what I need out that far I get the 270 out

It ain't the look that counts when the **** hits the fan but I take your point.
Get the right sbr tax stamps and local approvals and ill build you a real pretty one in 14.5.
