Those tang mounted sights are valuable. Dont drill it as you have one of the older models and I have seen too many butchered. We would like to see some pictures.

Hey guys, how about the .308 Winchester and the new .308 Marlin? Talk about a mix up. I wonder how many guys have bought the wrong ammo for those. Marlin should have used a different moniker for that one.

f It needs to be drilled DON'T do it . Use as is or sell it and buy a stevens 200, axis or ruger american in 308 all between 300 and 400. Then scope away. Please don't mess up a fine old rifle.

Good point again! I feel the same way about old matching numbered cars. Ok so im not drilling it out, and had it at the range yesterday and the sites are still pretty right after sitting in a case for 20yrs! Im trying to date it and the barrel has a "V" stamped in it, and the lever has a "19F" stamped any guesses? Im looking and will continue to thanks again!

I believe thats a 1955 up to when ever they start adding scope mount holes. Better contact savage arms with a serial number and they can problaly date it for you. rifle with the F on it. maybe this site can help a bit . - http://www.savage99.com/index.php

If it is Post 1950 and is below NRA 80 % condition tapping it will not hurt the value.

You got a great gun and good deer caliber!!!
I took my first deer with same rig and caliber MANY years ago.
But, as stated by many above, there are a lot of '300's' out there so when you go to the store you MUST know exactly what caliber you are buying for.
Good hunting, and welcome to the forum!!!
