Yes you have the wrong ammo. There is Ammo in the caliber 300 Savage. It will specify "300 Savage" on the box\

Yes, you have the wrong ammo. You probably have .300 Winchester Magnum ammo. What you need is .300 Savage ammo. There is a world of difference between the two. Just to add to the confusion, there are other rifles out there that use an ammo that begins with 300. The .300 H&H Magnum comes to mind. There are many cartridge names that have no rhyme or reason to them and many do not make sense. You have learned the hard way.

Why did you not look the 300 savage ammo up before you went to buy anything. You have a great hunting rifle with that model 99 and the 300 savage cartidge. Be smart now and learn about both before shooting.

Wow great response and a big help! Thank you all, and I have been reading all about savage arms history. Im going to buy the right ammo and hopefully go to the range today. Although im going im not expecting to much as far as shooting it in, it still has old tang ( I think) sites on it. Im planing on getting a scope so I can hunt next year. However I have read that drilling for the scope takes value away. Any thoughts for scope mounts? But not like im a collector so if I have to get it drilled I will.

personally i wouldn't drill it for scope mounts if they were not there already. because, yes it does decrease it's value and they are not making fine rifles like these anymore and it seems sometimes the mutilated ones are the ones that usually end up for sale. learn to use the open sights, like the rifle was meant to be used. or sell it intact and buy a newer rifle that has scope mounts and mount a scope on it.
