Where I live it is not,(mid-west), I have to prowl gun shows, usually without luck, which is funny because there are usually a lot of Mausers for sale, even those sold by "he who will not be named" I do better on the internet. You will more than likely find the less expensive rounds are Berdan. If you don't reload, no problem. If you do, learn to reload Berdan.
There aren't that many US companies making 8mm Mauser that I know of. I don't know the real reason, but have heard that it is a liability thing. There are two sizes of German 8mm bullets. I believe that the older first bullet is smaller than the later bullet used in more recent German arms. I think that the feeling of the companies is, if you produce the rounds with the current bigger bullet, and some body loading a rifle known to be an 8mm but which is older, and made for the smaller bullet, shoots it; his gun might blow up, might get sued.
Personally, the US offering I did find, seemed to be under powered, and would't cycle my Kar 43( if that's the right name. It has been a long time since I owned it. I like to class it a PW arm. PW= before wife. Had a lot more PW classed weapons).
As for what 8mm there is available, just type in," 8mm Mauser ammo" in a computer search and you will likely find some.
If I see you at the range, I'll share some of mine, with another Mauser man.
