To me the cost depends on the use. I also have a pretty big stock pile of Turk ammo for blasting away. In 8x57 I have a shooter, a hunter, and a built sniper.
The shooter and sniper get surplus. The hunter and sniper both get handloads. I have more off the wall bullets for 8mm including 200gr CG lead spire points. if you push them past 2100fps, they will go of into never-never land. They will deform from the friction from air at that point. I really have fun w/ LFNGC, 175gr. They are plenty accurate, but again you need to keep velosity down.
I shoot mostly 175 and 200gr reloads, but have data that is safe for a 200gr bullet at 2900fps, that is smokin'. I've never gotten up the nerve to test that load.

Where I live it is not,(mid-west), I have to prowl gun shows, usually without luck, which is funny because there are usually a lot of Mausers for sale, even those sold by "he who will not be named" I do better on the internet. You will more than likely find the less expensive rounds are Berdan. If you don't reload, no problem. If you do, learn to reload Berdan.
There aren't that many US companies making 8mm Mauser that I know of. I don't know the real reason, but have heard that it is a liability thing. There are two sizes of German 8mm bullets. I believe that the older first bullet is smaller than the later bullet used in more recent German arms. I think that the feeling of the companies is, if you produce the rounds with the current bigger bullet, and some body loading a rifle known to be an 8mm but which is older, and made for the smaller bullet, shoots it; his gun might blow up, might get sued.
Personally, the US offering I did find, seemed to be under powered, and would't cycle my Kar 43( if that's the right name. It has been a long time since I owned it. I like to class it a PW arm. PW= before wife. Had a lot more PW classed weapons).
As for what 8mm there is available, just type in," 8mm Mauser ammo" in a computer search and you will likely find some.
If I see you at the range, I'll share some of mine, with another Mauser man.

Good caliber. But it's a .32. Some cool milsurp rifles and european ones around. Surplus is drying up. If u go to SG it was cheaper for old Yugo, last I saw, it was least-expensive-per-round to buy in batches of 360 rounds than more or less...

do NOT buy the 8m m ammo cans from Sportsmans guide http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/200-rds-mauser-8-mm-198-gr-fmj-ammo-with-can.aspx?a=984601

I just received soem and it had a > 50% failure rate (old old Iranian ammo). Out of 40 rounds shot I had 2 duds and 22 hang fires. Hang fires scary and dangerous. Luckily I got them to refund my order.

I have an old yugo Mauser and about 600+ FMJs (surplus Egyptian and reloaded ammo). I had outfitted for hunting, but the sights on it are terrible. It really needs a peep sight.
