i have both. if you reload, the possibilities for both are huge to say the least. IMO for target shooting the 7mm-08 has a slight edge due to it's ballistics. here is some information pulled from Hornady's website. ballistics comparison between the two.
7mm-08 using a 139 gr. SST bullet.

very close but just a slight edge with the 7mm-08. now reloading, there are many more options and variables to consider as well. both my 7mm-08 and my 308 are Marlin XS7's and both are used for target shooting. but hunting uses, they are pretty close as to be interchangeable.
