Last I heard there were no plans to re-issue 7.62 AK's.
7.62 x 39mm = better barrier penetration
5.56 x 45mm = carry more ammo, faster to get back on target, flatter trajectory for increased range in open country.
I own and use both calibers, and while the 7.62 x 39mm is impressive on cinder block, car bodies and such, it drops like a rock beyond 200 yards. A lot of the western U.S. is pretty open country, if you can identify a threat with optics, it is much better to deal with it at a distance rather than let the threat get too close to you. Much easier to get hits at any reasonable distance with the 5.56mm. The Soviets realized this and changed over.

AR in 5.56. It's what I'm most familiar with. Best to keep it simple.

i'd go with the 5.56 since i already have an AR in that caliber. but i still think my 12 ga. is much better!

The 12 ga. is better at, say 40 yards and under with buck, and up to 100 with slugs, at the cost of much greater recoil, not being able to carry near as much ammo, and being worthless at several hundred yards as compared to the 5.56mm x 45. Soon, if this thread goes on, some will say that their .338 LAPUA OR .50 BMG is better, but I was thinking our choices here were .5.56mm or 7.62 x39mm.

For a street sweeper, I don't think you could get much better than a Saiga 12 with some 20 round drums of #4 Buckshot. Even out to 80 yards, while far from a 1 shot stop, buckshot inflicts enough of a wound to require immediate medical attention.

And at 100 yards it still has enough energy to make the average person THINK about what they're doing. With the spread at that range you would be wounding multiple people per shot.

Just 1 20 round drum from a commanding position would probably be enough to turn most "mobs" around provided they weren't armed themselves. I'd want about 6, a barricade and a getaway vehicle just in case though. LoL

But if it's limited to the choice in the OP I would pick 5.56 simply because I could carry more of it. I'm not necessarily concerned with 1 shot stops, just sending enough rounds their way and hurting enough of them to make them pick somebody else to play with.

Honestly, there are a few dirty tricks that can be done with cans of good quality CS/OC spray that work great at dissipating crowds with bad attitudes. But I won't be posting them on the internet. (And I have *cough* NO experience in actually performing any of these alleged "dirty tricks" *cough cough*)

I got a sharp stick. Its all I have left after the boat went down. But if the boat hadn't gone down 5.56 would be my choice- I aint a commie.

Trying to keep it between the 2 choices, and having a hard time remembering the exact situation, so here goes: holed up, against an incoming crowd, Id take the 7.62 due to penetration. Every shot into a crowd should get multiple hits, reducing the crowd very quickly. On the go, Id probly stick with 5.56. Its alot lighter when compared so could move easier or carry more.
But, Im thinking AK platform vs AR platform, both with FMJ loads. I would prefer to have my varmint loads for the AR, as their would be dramatic results from any hit. If its just a crowd coming in, shouldnt need the extra punch for car doors, barriers, etc.
I really dont see how either would be a bad choice, but since I have 2 hands, why not choose both? I know, its supposed to be an either/or choice.

I haven't read through the whole thread, mostly because I hate these stupid hypothetical threads.

Can we have a real discussion someday? Or better yet, why does it have to a stupid hypothetical situation in which we're receiving handouts from our neighbor? Why can't we just say "hey, which round do you prefer for which application?"

I went and re-read the original post. (Things got blurry along the way). If my neighbor was handing out ammo, id take whatever theyd give. If theyre handin out a rifle with the ammo, my decision is still based on holing up or moving.
