Default 7.62x51 vs .308

Just got my first .308 a few days ago. After reading a few things I figured I would ask. Is it safe to use a 7.62x51 (aka 7.62x51 NATO) in a .308?

Yes. In this case, the NATO load is generally the lighter load. It's the opposite for .223 and 5.56.

SSN Doc is correct.
the NATO load is lighter than the 308.

The difference is the throat of the barrel. The 308 has a little longer lead for the longer ogive you find on heavier longer rounds. The military x51 lead is expecting a shorter ogive.
