So what does an assault rifle look like?

^^^ The assault rifles of their eras. As were any number of other weapons that don't cause liberals to wet their pants. Scary stuff.

Get the rifle best suited for your use and don't let liberal bed wetters scare you away from a useful tool.
+1 on the Springfield M1A.

Liberal Anti-Gun Term: "Assault Rifle"

If you are not considering the AR type rifle, I agree with the rest of our friends here on the FTF. You may want to take a serious look at the Springfield M1-A Style Rifles. They are great weapons and very reliable and as you mentioned chambered in 7.62X51. The FN-LAR Style Rifles are also a very good rifle. The company that I can think of in case you want to take a look at some is DSA out of Chicago IL. area. But as JD has referred there is just something "Fine" about the Springfield M-1 A. I did notice that someone here on the Forum had one for sale and another had a Polytech M-14 Style Rifle for sale. It obviously would be less expensive than the Springfield. However quality is not quite as good in my opinion! Let us see some Pictures when you get your new rifle and a range report.
Here is a picture of a Springfield M-1 A *Loaded Model.
