Not part of the OP's question. BTW, The .30-06 would have been extinct if MacArthur had not pushed for the M1 Garand to be re-chambered to it. It was designed as a 10 round .276 Pederson.
The 7mm08 was an attempt to make a U.S. cartridge that had the characteristics of a 7x57, the .276 is 7x51, same as the 7mm-08. The U.S. market had and still has an issue w/ everything metric. 6 of one, 1/2 a dozen of another. They both do the job. I doubt any game would tell the difference.

now had it been, 7mm-08 vs. 308 vs. 30-06, then the 30-06 IMO would be the better option due to so many variations of factory loaded ammo, and much more choices if one reloads. the 30-06 has the advantage when loaded with much heavier bullets at increased distances than the other two. but in the comparison of the 7mm-08 to the 308, ballistics are pretty close when shooting the same weight bullets. the advantage IMO is the 308 if you don't reload and the 7mm-08 if you do reload. both are very capable cartridges and whatever game you would use it on, isn't going to know the difference.
