I'm w wondering what would be a good cartridge in the 6.5 to hunt with out to like 500 or so yards that won't eat bbls like cookie monster eats cookies any ideas?

rule is the more powder you stuff in a bottleneck cartridge the more it eats the throat.

I like the 6.5 Creedmoor and 260 Remington. But I handload for all the calibers I shoot,so ammo is never a problem to find as long as I have the bullets.
The 6.5x55 is a great hunting caliber,and is still a standard caliber in European countries.Ammo is pretty easy to find at local shops in my area.

.260 Remington. I use the new 140 grain hybrid Bergers in my .260
Rem. for 1000 yards and am very pleased. Actually all the 6.5 varients are good to go.

Ya I've heard about the 6.5 x55 being a nice round the 6.5 creedmore as well I just don't want to build something that I have to rechamber all the time

I would say the 6.5X47mm Lapua should give you the best barrel life of the 6.5 mm calibers. The 260 Rem I have is supposed to be good for about 3000 rounds before re-barreling.

6.5x55 barrel will last 10,000 rounds. That was the idea when the Swede's adopted it in 1894. I'm not seeing a 6.5-.284, .260, or any other 6.5 coming close. The 6.5x47 has a less then 70fps advantage using 139-140gr bullets. The 6.5x55 can still shoot 152, 155, 160 gr more effectively. If you have a '98 action or other newer action, the 6.5x55 can be ramped up a bit if max velosity is your game. If you want a hunter, the 6.5x55 offers heavy bullet options the others don't. Elk at 300 yards is on the table w/ a well made bullet. It really comes down to what you want to hunt. The 6.5x47 was made for 300 meter target shooting, the rifles reflect that. It did win the 600 meter w/ Norma ammo.
