You could neck the 06 case down to .20 or the WSM case down to .22 or .20. You could even neck the 30-378 or the RUM case down to 6mm. Or how about a .220 Swift AI necked down to .17 or .20?

I really want a .14 caliber some day.

The 14 Ackly Hornet looks like a winner to me.

14 Caliber bullets, barrels and reloading supplies

Tango, 5000fps with the .204, maybe with a downhill shot, a good tail wind, and in a vacuum.

The thing I worry about is presure. The faster you push something the more pressure it takes.

So Pressure is a big deal I think we need to address.

No your missing the point. I want to devlope a cartridge that will push a bullet to 5000+FPS. It can be a 50bmg necked to 6mm. I don't care what it is or looks like.

Since pressure is the key here, and I am assuming this rifle would be buil on a bolt action, wouldn't your starting point be simply which cartridge could handle the highest chamber pressure, then simply rebarrel it to a light weight varmint round? I would think something odd like an extremely necked down .30-06 or something of that nature.

The problem w/ necking down is it usaully increases pressure as more powder will be used for the smaller projectile. Example: 7mm Rem mag, 61000psi...264 mag 64000psi

Tango,
Take a visit over at Accurate Handloading - Welcome! , they might be able to help you in what you are looking to do. I think 5000fps is reachable, but it will take time and work. Barrel life will be very short. I have worked with some wildcats approaching 4700fps with a barrel life of only 30 rounds on average in one caliber and about 80 rounds in another. Bullet construction is also a problem at those speeds and rate of twist required to stabilize the bullet. Mid flight blow-ups are common with thin jackets. Good luck.............

Jim.........
