5000 FPS Varmint round.
I want a cartridge that will put a bullet to 5000 FPS. Can it be done?

The fastest thing that I have heard of so far is the .204 Ruger which I believe is cooking along at 4400 FPS, but there may be something out there quicker.

I want 5000+ FPS this would have to be a total wildcat. I am not worried about barrel life at all. Just just want to see what a projectile can do to a varmint at 5000+FPS.

How fast can you push a bullet in a bolt action 22-250. I would have to think either one of those two rounds would be your best bet to start from. I think 5000 FPS would absolutely vaporize anything squirrel sized.

After two minutes of research, I found a couple of rounds that might live up to the bill . . . the 22-243 and the .22 Cheetah. Check those out and see if they are what you are looking for.

I don't think the thin jackets of 22 cal and smaller varmint bullets are going to cut it with that much speed.
Might need a bullet that is tough like a Swift Scirocco II.
Wonder if you could do it with say a 14 cal or even a 10 cal bullet.
10 cal you might be looking at 15 or 20 gr bullets. Not going to be a good windy bucking bullet but I am sure you could neck down a 223 to a 10 cal that would be pushing it right along.

Seems like I read somewhere that the "pressure wave" that is created with smokeless powder is around 5400fps and that it was impossible to achieve any speed above that and VERY difficult to get close. It may even be dangerous to try.....May need to do more research, but I'm pretty sure that there IS a speed limit....
Interesting reading..... http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=559484

Tango, if you were to use a barnes 45gr TSX it might get you you speed w/ a .22 wildcat, .22-.243 or CHeetah. I doubt it would pass 4500fps though w/ the CHeetah and 4200 w/ the .22-.243.
