Well, besides the differences on the diagram in the throat radii, the NATO cartridges have thicker walls for higher durability, which means less space inside for the powder, which results in higher pressure.

The case thickness is the same.

Why you, you . . . MYTHBUSTER!

All my illusions are shattered! Or at least the one about .223/5.56 casing wall thicknesses.
At least if one can trust Wikpedia anyways.

Thanks for the link. That is . . interesting. I know many do shoot 5.56 in .223 rifles. Have any of you who do, ever have damage from it?

Yup. The information I linked you on wiki was sourced from here: 223 Rem + 223 AI Cartridge Guide

Looking at the article, it seems that some but not all NATO brass is thicker with smaller capacity.

Just fyi wikipedia is not a reputable source. When using wiki for info you need a second or third source to confirm. Wiki is a user editable webpage which means anyone can become a "wiki contributor" and print "facts"

303tom If you did not read about the difference by looking it up you will never understand the difference.

Vincine I have seen several of Rock River Arms varment rifles with just a trigger change to 3lb shoot factory loads of .223 fed match under 3/4 and home brewed loads under 3/8" at 100 yards. Amassing accurate rilfes. They had RRA wilson arms air guaged 24" barrels. Both had a added adjustable cheek welds added.

Any rifle chambered for .223 Remington can not safely fire 5.56 NATO ammunition. The brass, case dimensions, and pressures are too high/large in 5.56 NATO ammunition for .223 Remington chamberings to handle.
