5.56 bolt action?
I can't seem to find a 5.56 NATO bolt action. I keep being 'offered' .223 rifles instead. This is an email I received from Remington:
>Thank you for visiting Remington Country! We certainly appreciate you taking the time to write in with your question. Any rifle chambered for .223 Remington can not safely fire 5.56 NATO ammunition. The brass, case dimensions, and pressures are too high/large in 5.56 NATO ammunition for .223 Remington chamberings to handle. Should you have additional questions, please feel free to contact our Consumer Services Department at 800-243-9700, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, EST, Monday through Friday. < Does anyone know of a 5.56 NATO bolt action? |
Why not buy a savage rifle and have the barrel pulled and the chamber recut for a .223 wydle chamber?? That will feed the 5.56 fine and the rifle should no problems with the pressure spike of shooting the nato round in a standard .223 chamber. or 5.56 chamber It just the lead and jump that cause the pressure spike. Company CS guys typicaly don't know poop about there products any how.

the reason you dont find them is because the 5.56 case doesnt lend itself well to accuracy loading. it wouldnt be a popular seller. anyway you can do as suggested by hardluk and have a 223 reamed out to wylde or 556.

5.56 is just a military round, is all.
There are very few bolt action rifles in that caliber because it would be a retro-design. Have you tried an AR with a 20 to 24 inch barrel for accuracy? |

>Tim Blazek told me they went the 5.56 route so that the abundant supply of military surplus ammo could be used in the MVP. < I've tried a few AR 15s, they don't quite fit right, although I'm sure I could adjust to it/them. The Mossberg MVP is very interesting. Thanks. |
