Default 45-70 smooth bore

Hey there fellow firearms enthusiasts, I am curious if a 45-70 smooth bore rifle will accept & fire a 410 shotgun shell?? Thanks.

Have never seen a 45-70 smoothbore "rifle"- that is a contradiction in terms. What the heck do you have?

Well C3 its like this. I'm a Captain on an offshore supply vessel, & our line throwing gun is chambered in 45-70 & the cartridges are blanks. There are brass rods you insert down the "business" end of the barrel to attach the line to that gets shot over to another vessel in distress. I have inspected the barrel closely & indeed it is a smooth bore. (no rifling). I DO NOT wish to shoot any shotgun shells through it. I just wanted to know if it was possible, or if anyone had ever heard of it.

They are different calibers. The .45-70 is .458 caliber and the .410 shotshell is .410 caliber.

OK, I'm with you now- "Line Projector". Any chance it is a Harrington & Richardson?

The answer is probably not. Although the shell chambers, a shot shell functions differently than a metallic cartridge when fired. A metallic cartridge- the bullet is pushed straight out of the metal case. But a shot shell UNFOLDS.

Think about a fired shotshell for a moment- they are longer than an unfired, due to the mouth of the shell opening OUT. In a shotgun, there is a place for that to happen- that is why a 3 inch shell will chamber in a 2 3/4 inch gun, but is unsafe to fire- pressures jump WAY the hell up there, because the opened shell partially rstricts the bore. Your line thrower has no equivalent space for a shotshell to open- bored straight thru, I betcha.

COULD you load 45-70 shot rounds, and use them safely? Probably- the line thrower guns were not designed for that, but they take pretty stout pressures. Would it be wise? Not unless you have pirates climbing the taffrail, and you have no other weapons. Will a single .410 shell blow it up? Probably not. Could I ask you to move down to the far end of the range before you do that? Seeing stains on my range bag always makes me depressed.

Hahaaaaa!! Good one c3!! I think it is Harrington Richardson. I'm at work on the boat right now & unable to connect my laptop to the internet, but when I get home I'll post some pics of it for you to see.

Greetings, Gentlemen,

In answer to the original question. I don't know why not. When I was a kid, I used to shoot 410's in my 45/70 Springfield rifle. Shot a few rabbits and birds with it.

SORRY I CALL BS.

If you look at the dimensions of the two there is no way that can happen.

There is .080" difference in rim diameter. The .410 is that much smaller and would fall right out.

A .45 long Colt won't fall thru my Sharps...a WW Colt case measures .508 while the 45-70 with a WW case shows .602.
